"Attractively priced complete bikes are often sold with low-quality wheels for good reason. After all, experience shows that the customer looks first at the frame, then at the gears - and only then at the wheels. It is rather unusual for the purchase decision to be largely dependent on the wheels when buying a bike. Especially as wheels can be replaced quickly and easily. With a new set of carbon wheels, riding enjoyment can be noticeably increased and the bike weight reduced.
The calculation goes like this: lightweight carbon wheels weigh between 1,400 and 1,600 grams, depending of course on the price, manufacturer and rim height. Standard aluminium wheels, on the other hand, can easily weigh 500 to 700 grams more. If you then fit a lighter and faster tyre, you not only save double-digit watts, but also up to one kilogram in total system weight. This positive effect applies to gravel bikes and road bikes with aluminium frames as well as carbon models."
